Universal Washing Power

Samizdat readers sometimes had to resort to various means of concealing their texts: people would keep them under their mattresses, bury them in the forest, and even throw them in a saucepan of soup during an apartment search. As this photo shows, a washing powder box also made for a convenient hiding-place for The Gulag Archipelago (1974) during the 1970s.
